The recipient shall not loan the instrument to any third party nor place the instrument in the care or custody of any third party without the prior consent of the EYO Music Director and/or General Manager. The recipient shall follow the additional Instrument and Bow Care Guidelines.

String Instruments and Bows

Any tonal adjustments, rehairs, maintenance, repairs or restoration work necessary must be performed by a luthier/archetier approved by the EYO. No repairs or restoration work is to be undertaken without the prior approval of the luthier.

The recipient is responsible for the costs of all tonal adjustments, rehairs, and regular maintenance of the instrument. Other costs may be paid by the EYO and will be determined on a case by case basis.

David Wright Cello Loan Initiative

History

David Wright (1964-2021) was a member of the Edmonton Youth Orchestra from 1978 to 1984, a factor that contributed to his lifelong love of the cello. He graduated from the University of Alberta in the eighties and eventually moved to Ottawa to work for the federal government.

While living in Ottawa David continued to play his cello in community orchestras and chamber groups. After his passing his fine cello and two bows were donated to the Edmonton Youth Orchestra for the use of promising young cellists.

Apply for a Cello

A better instrument makes available new realms of expression and technique; this can change a young cellist’s life. The mission of the David Wright Instrument Loan Initiative is to make a fine cello/bow available to a deserving student who could otherwise not afford the instrument they need to progress.

The value of the cello available for loan is $20,000. If you feel a better instrument could make a difference in your studies and performances, we encourage you to read the Expectations and Requirements below. If this is an opportunity you are interested in and your situation fits, please submit an application.

OUR EXPECTATIONS:

You must be actively studying with a private teacher. You are probably between 12 and 20 years old and an active member of the Intermediate or Senior Youth Orchestra. However, there may be exceptions. Your playing needs to be well beyond the beginning stages, and we expect greater-than-average drive and commitment. There may also be financial limitations that prevent you from either purchasing or renting a quality instrument at this time.

APPLICATION SHOULD INCLUDE:

· $50 refundable application fee made out to Edmonton Youth Orchestra.

· Completed application (downloadable PDF below). Please provide extra pages as needed for your personal essay.

· A statement of financial need should be written by a parent, or whoever is providing for your studies.

· Video (see requirements on application).

· Teacher recommendation.

If you are selected, there is a $400 fee the initial year and a $200 fee for subsequent years that the cello is loaned. This initial fee must be paid before receiving the cello. A bursary may be available if this is prohibitive. Recipients are also responsible for insurance on the loaned cello, provided by a reputable agent. We can advise you concerning insurance options and possible carriers.
